THE AVID JOURNEY
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program for academic support that prepares students who desire to attend college be eligible and successful. With over 40 years of success, AVID continues to help millions of students across the nation.

In Arizona, AVID has had an impact on Arizona districts and schools for over 23 years. As of 2022, there's 58 AVID
districts and 264 sites, both elementary and secondary schools combined.
In Arizona, 99% of AVID Seniors have graduated on time and had an average 3.2 GPA. At least 75% of students applied to a four-year college and 68% got accepted.
HISTORY
AVID is an educational nonprofit that was established by Mary Catherine Swanson in 1980 in San Diego, California. Prior to the development of AVID she taught English for 20 years.
Ms. Swanson has been recognized for her exceptional leadership. CNN and Time Magazine named her America's Best Teacher in 2001. She was one of the three recipients of the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education (2001).
Ms. Swanson retired as CEO in 2006 but still remains on the Board of Directors.
