The Impact
AVID is one of the many programs offered at Betty H. Fairfax. Betty Fairfax opened their doors in 2007 through the largest district in the Phoenix area. AVID is a part of a group of prominent programs attached to Fairfax, e.g., International Baccalaureate (IB) and Dual Enrollment.

AVID students are actively involved in their own education and grow academically as well as personally through AVID strategies. Those strategies include writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR). Students become masters of the learning process that involves, taking Cornell notes, participating in tutoring, learning how to solve problems on their own, collaboration with other students, and feedback. Through the learning process, students gain a sense of pride because of their successful efforts. AVID students should be positive and encouraging of one another, arrive prepared for all of their classes, act as role models, take part of self-advocacy, communicate with their teachers, participate in extracurriculars, and maintain college eligibility.
The students at Betty Fairfax continuously feel the impact through AVID. AVID provides support for students to learn about the different resources available and how they can use them to full advantage. AVID serves as a means to help students get used to the idea of college; the strategies students are taught help create a balance in the students’ lives. AVID gives students the confidence and determination to follow their dreams. Since the beginning of the program, AVID has helped hundreds of students obtain skills and aiding the transition to a post-secondary education. The students both freshmen and seniors have felt the impact of the program. Over the last two years, AVID has grown exponentially and with the help of AVID Site Coordinator, Laura Strange-Smit, it will only continue to grow.

AVID is a program not only where students learn about classroom skills but also important skills they can apply throughout their adult lives. AVID creates routine-based habits, increases social awareness, and peer-to-peer bonds.
